Gradient/Erosion
Control Structures

The TRWCD has identified 13 critical escarpmental creeks within the watershed that are experiencing increased erosion over time and require remedial measures to stabilize the banks and streambeds.

Active erosion frequently occurs higher up on the escarpment due to the steepness of the slope. To isolate these areas of shale infestation/deposition the structures are constructed at higher elevations where the most benefits are realized.

Construction of these structures significantly reduces downstream sedimentation/siltation by slowing the water and allowing shale deposition to take place. Thereby alleviating stream bank and streambed erosion.

Additional benefits include improved water quality, ground water recharge, improved fish and wildlife habitat as well as agricultural and recreational enhancement.

Depending on the location and size of the structures, materials utilized range from sheet metal poling for larger structures, geotextile and fieldstone for the smaller one.

Over 90 have been constructed to date with the majority being co-operatively funded with various external funding agencies.
